K1 DIY Fruit Head Band

Lesson Title: Fun with Fruits - Fruit Headband

Objective: To create a fun and interactive art and craft activity with your child, using fruits as a theme, to enhance their creativity, sensory skills, and fine motor skills.

Materials:

  • Fruit Headband sheet
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Glue
  • Hole puncher
  • Coloured paper
  • Yarn or ribbons
  • Different types of fruits (real or pictures of fruits)

Procedure:

  1. Start by introducing the fruit month theme to your child. Explain to them the importance of eating fruits and the different types of fruits available. Show them different fruits and let them name the fruits they know.

  2. Next, introduce the Fruit Headband activity. Explain to them that they will be making a fun and colourful headband with different types of fruits.

  3. Pop out the headband and fruit shapes from the sheet. This will form the base of the headband.

  4. Glue the long strips together and make a circle to make ring that fits on the child's head

  5. Show them how to stick fruits onto the headband using glue.

  6. You can decorate the headband more with yarn string and more cut out fruits.

  7. Once the headband is completed, encourage your child to wear the fruit headband and have a fun fruit-themed role-playing activity. Ask your child some questions to encourage discussion, such as "What fruits are you wearing on your head today?" and "What is your favourite fruit?"

Learning Opportunities:

  • Creativity: The child is encouraged to use their imagination and creativity to come up with different colour combinations, fruit choices, and design of the headband.
  • Sensory Skills: By looking, touching and cutting out the different types of fruits, the child will develop their sensory skills.
  • Fine Motor Skills: The activity of gluing the fruits onto the base of the headband and tying the yarn or ribbon will enhance the child's fine motor skills.

Extension Activities:

  • Have a fruit-themed picnic with your child and their friends. Encourage them to bring different types of fruits and share with each other.
  • Create a fruit chart with your child, categorising different fruits by colour, taste, and texture.
  • Make a fruit smoothie with your child, allowing them to choose their favourite fruits and assisting with blending and serving.

Discussion Points:

  • What are your favourite types of fruits and why?
  • How do fruits help our bodies stay healthy and strong?
  • Can you think of any other ways to use fruits in art and craft activities?

Assessment: Observe your child during the activity to note their level of engagement and creativity. Encourage them to talk about their choices of fruit and colour combinations. After the activity is completed, ask them open-ended questions to assess what they have learned and their overall experience.

By engaging in this fun and interactive Fruit Headband activity, children can develop their creativity, sensory skills, and fine motor skills, while also learning important facts about fruits and their benefits to our health.
